Background
Inaugurated in 1990, Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (SMOPS) is an annual event organized by Hwa Chong Institution. In 2002, SMOPS was renamed as Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS) as it includes overseas centres from Asia Pacific countries. In 2017, it introduced Junior SMOPS in Singapore open for Primary 5 students.
Eligibility:
It is open for Primary 5 (Junior SMOPS) and Primary 6 students from local schools. Only school teachers can register students for the contest. No Individual registration is allowed.
Format:
There are two rounds of competition for APMOPS: the First Round and the Invitation Round.
- The first round which is held in the respective local and overseas centres in early April. In Singapore, the first round of competition is still called the SMOPS, held in the premises of Hwa Chong Institution.
- Top scorers for the first round of competition from local and overseas centres will be invited to the Invitation Round of APMOPS held in the last week of the semestral school term in Singapore to compete for the top positions.
Contest Date:
The contest is usually held in April every year.
